Overview

How professional whitening works

Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to lighten the natural colour of your teeth. It can be done in the chair, at home with custom-fitted trays, or with a combination of both.

Before whitening, your clinician checks your teeth and gums to make sure whitening is appropriate. Whitening works on natural enamel only, so existing fillings, crowns and veneers will not change colour. This is important to know if you are planning other cosmetic treatment.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • Temporary sensitivity and gum irritation are common and usually settle.
  • Results vary and are not permanent; colour can gradually return.
  • Some types of discolouration respond poorly to whitening.
  • Over-the-counter and non-professional products are not a substitute for an assessment.

FAQs

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

Will whitening change the colour of my fillings or veneers?

No. Whitening only lightens natural enamel. Existing fillings, crowns and veneers keep their colour, so if you are planning cosmetic treatment it is often best to whiten first and match restorations afterwards.
