Replacing several teeth with fewer implants.

Overview

What is an implant-supported bridge?

When several teeth in a row are missing, it is often not necessary to place an implant for each tooth. An implant-supported bridge uses two or more implants to hold a fixed bridge spanning the gap.

This can avoid placing crowns on healthy neighbouring teeth, and can reduce the number of implants needed compared with replacing each tooth individually.

The process

What to expect

  1. 01

    Assessment & planning

3D imaging and digital scans to plan implant positions and the bridge design.

  2. 02

    Implant placement

Implants are placed at the planned sites.

  3. 03

    Healing

A temporary restoration may be provided during healing.

  4. 04

    Bridge fitting

The final bridge is made and secured to the implants.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • Surgical risks include infection, swelling, nerve injury and implant failure.
  • Cleaning under the bridge needs specific tools and technique.
  • If one implant has a problem, the bridge may need to be removed for repair.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

How long does implant treatment take?

For a single implant, treatment typically takes several months from placement to final crown to allow the implant to integrate with the bone. Bone grafting or full-arch treatment can affect timeframes. Your clinician will give you an estimate for your situation.
