Single Tooth Implants

One implant and crown to replace one missing tooth.

Model of a single implant-supported crown between natural teeth

Overview

What is a single tooth implant?

When one tooth is missing, a single implant can be placed in the jaw to support a new crown. Because the implant acts like a tooth root, the neighbouring teeth do not need to be shaped, as they would be for a bridge.

Planning starts with a 3D scan to assess the bone and nearby structures. Sometimes bone grafting is needed before or during implant placement. Your clinician will explain the expected timeframe, which typically spans several months from placement to final crown.

The process

What to expect

  1. 01

    Assessment & 3D scan

We assess bone volume, gum health and the position of nerves and sinuses.

  2. 02

    Implant placement

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Sedation can be discussed.

  3. 03

    Healing

Usually a few months for the implant to integrate. A temporary tooth can often be provided.

  4. 04

    Crown

A custom crown is made and attached to the implant.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • Risks include infection, bleeding, swelling, nerve injury, sinus complications and implant failure.
  • Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and gum disease can increase the risk of complications.
  • Implants need careful cleaning and regular professional reviews.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

FAQs

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

Does implant treatment hurt?

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some discomfort, swelling and bruising is common for a few days afterwards and can usually be managed with pain relief your clinician recommends. Sedation can be discussed for longer procedures or if you feel anxious.

How long does implant treatment take?

For a single implant, treatment typically takes several months from placement to final crown to allow the implant to integrate with the bone. Bone grafting or full-arch treatment can affect timeframes. Your clinician will give you an estimate for your situation.

Is an implant better than a bridge?

Neither is better for everyone. An implant does not rely on neighbouring teeth, while a bridge avoids surgery and can be completed sooner. Your bone, the health of nearby teeth, your general health and your preferences all matter. Your clinician will explain the pros and cons of each.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost depends on how many teeth are being replaced, the type of implant restoration, whether extra procedures such as bone grafting are needed, and the materials used. Because every mouth is different, we do not quote a price before a clinician has assessed you.

After your consultation you will receive a written treatment plan with an itemised estimate, so you know the expected cost before anything begins. You can also read about payment options.

How long do dental implants last?

Many implants last for many years, but no one can guarantee how long an implant will last. It depends on factors such as your general health, smoking, gum health, bite forces and how well the implant and surrounding teeth are cared for.

The crown, bridge or denture attached to an implant can wear over time and may need repair or replacement. Regular check-ups and good daily cleaning are important.
