Overview

What is All-on-4?

The All-on-4 approach uses four implants to support a full arch of fixed teeth. Two implants are typically placed towards the front of the jaw and two angled towards the back, which can make use of available bone and, in some cases, reduce the need for bone grafting.

In suitable cases, a fixed temporary bridge can be attached soon after surgery. After a healing period, this is replaced with a final bridge.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • Surgical risks include infection, swelling, bruising, nerve injury, sinus complications and implant failure.
  • Not everyone is suitable; your bone and bite determine the best approach.
  • A soft diet is needed during early healing.
  • Regular professional maintenance is required.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

FAQs

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

What is the difference between All-on-4 and All-on-6?

Both support a fixed full-arch bridge. All-on-4 uses four implants, often angled to make the most of available bone. All-on-6 uses six implants to spread biting forces further. The right number depends on your bone, jaw size and bite.

Does implant treatment hurt?

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some discomfort, swelling and bruising is common for a few days afterwards and can usually be managed with pain relief your clinician recommends. Sedation can be discussed for longer procedures or if you feel anxious.
