Understanding implants
What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium or zirconia post that is placed in the jawbone to act like the root of a tooth. Once the implant has integrated with the bone, it can support a crown, a bridge or a full set of replacement teeth.
Implants can be an option for people missing a single tooth, several teeth or all of their teeth. However, they are not suitable for everyone. Your general health, the amount and quality of bone available, gum health and habits such as smoking can all affect whether implants are appropriate and how predictable treatment may be.
At your consultation, your clinician will take the time to assess these factors, which usually includes a 3D scan (CBCT). They will explain all of your options, including alternatives to implants such as bridges or dentures, so you can make an informed choice.

Losing teeth can affect how you eat, speak and feel. Implant treatment is a significant decision, so we take the time to make sure it is the right one for you.

3D planning
Implant position is planned using 3D imaging of your jaw and digital scans of your teeth.
Options explained
We discuss every reasonable option, including non-implant alternatives, with their benefits and limitations.
Ongoing care
Implants need regular reviews and good home care. We plan for the long term from the start.
The journey
Your implant journey
- Step 1
Consultation & scans
A full assessment, including a 3D scan where appropriate, to understand your bone and anatomy.
- Step 2
Planning
Your clinician plans the number and position of implants and the type of restoration.
- Step 3
Implant placement
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, with sedation options discussed where appropriate.
- Step 4
Healing
A healing period allows the implant to integrate with the bone. Temporary teeth may be provided.
- Step 5
Final restoration
Your crown, bridge or full-arch teeth are made and fitted, followed by regular reviews.

Does implant treatment hurt?
Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some discomfort, swelling and bruising is common for a few days afterwards and can usually be managed with pain relief your clinician recommends. Sedation can be discussed for longer procedures or if you feel anxious.
How long does implant treatment take?
For a single implant, treatment typically takes several months from placement to final crown to allow the implant to integrate with the bone. Bone grafting or full-arch treatment can affect timeframes. Your clinician will give you an estimate for your situation.
Is an implant better than a bridge?
Neither is better for everyone. An implant does not rely on neighbouring teeth, while a bridge avoids surgery and can be completed sooner. Your bone, the health of nearby teeth, your general health and your preferences all matter. Your clinician will explain the pros and cons of each.
What is the difference between All-on-4 and All-on-6?
Both support a fixed full-arch bridge. All-on-4 uses four implants, often angled to make the most of available bone. All-on-6 uses six implants to spread biting forces further. The right number depends on your bone, jaw size and bite.

Am I too old for dental implants?
Age alone does not usually rule out implants. What matters more is your general health, bone and gum health, and your ability to care for the implants. A consultation and 3D scan help determine suitability.
How much do dental implants cost?
The cost depends on how many teeth are being replaced, the type of implant restoration, whether extra procedures such as bone grafting are needed, and the materials used. Because every mouth is different, we do not quote a price before a clinician has assessed you.
After your consultation you will receive a written treatment plan with an itemised estimate, so you know the expected cost before anything begins. You can also read about payment options.
How long do dental implants last?
Many implants last for many years, but no one can guarantee how long an implant will last. It depends on factors such as your general health, smoking, gum health, bite forces and how well the implant and surrounding teeth are cared for.
The crown, bridge or denture attached to an implant can wear over time and may need repair or replacement. Regular check-ups and good daily cleaning are important.
