Overview

What are implant-supported dentures?

Many people who wear full dentures find that the lower denture in particular can feel loose. An implant-supported denture, sometimes called an overdenture, uses two or more implants with attachments that the denture clips onto.

The denture is still removed for cleaning, but it can feel considerably more stable when eating and speaking. This can be a more affordable alternative to a fixed full-arch bridge for some people.

The process

What to expect

  1. 01

    Assessment

A review of your current denture, gums and bone, including 3D imaging.

  2. 02

Usually two to four implants are placed in the jaw.

  3. 03

    Healing

Your existing denture may be adjusted to wear while the implants heal.

  4. 04

Attachments are connected and your denture is fitted to clip securely onto the implants.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • Surgical risks include infection, swelling, nerve injury and implant failure.
  • Attachments wear over time and need periodic replacement.
  • The denture must be removed and cleaned daily, and the implants cleaned carefully.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

FAQs

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

Does implant treatment hurt?

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some discomfort, swelling and bruising is common for a few days afterwards and can usually be managed with pain relief your clinician recommends. Sedation can be discussed for longer procedures or if you feel anxious.
