Dental Bridges

A fixed replacement for one or more missing teeth.

Overview

What is a dental bridge?

A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth to crowns placed on the teeth either side of the gap. Unlike a denture, a bridge is fixed in place and is not removed for cleaning.

Bridges can be a good option when the neighbouring teeth already have large fillings or crowns, or when dental implants are not suitable or preferred. Your clinician will explain how a bridge compares with an implant or a denture for your situation.

The process

What to expect

  1. 01

    Assessment

An examination and X-rays to check the supporting teeth and gums.

  2. 02

    Preparation

The supporting teeth are shaped and a scan is taken. A temporary bridge is fitted.

  3. 03

    Fitting

Your bridge is checked for fit, bite and appearance, then cemented.

  4. 04

    Care

We show you how to clean under the bridge using floss threaders or small brushes.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • Preparing supporting teeth is irreversible, including teeth that may otherwise be healthy.
  • Cleaning under a bridge needs a little extra care to prevent decay and gum problems.
  • If a supporting tooth develops a problem, the whole bridge may need to be replaced.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

FAQs

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

Is an implant better than a bridge?

Neither is better for everyone. An implant does not rely on neighbouring teeth, while a bridge avoids surgery and can be completed sooner. Your bone, the health of nearby teeth, your general health and your preferences all matter. Your clinician will explain the pros and cons of each.
