Overview

What are full-arch implants?

Full-arch implant treatment replaces an entire upper or lower set of teeth with a fixed bridge that is attached to several implants. Unlike a denture, it is not removed at home.

There are several ways to achieve this. The number of implants and the design of the bridge depend on your bone, your bite and your goals. Common approaches include All-on-4, All-on-6 and other All-on-X configurations.

Full-arch treatment is a significant procedure. We take time to explain each stage, the commitment involved in caring for implants, and the alternatives, so you can make a decision you feel confident about.

The process

What to expect

  1. 01

    Comprehensive assessment

Medical history, 3D imaging, scans and photographs to plan your new teeth.

  2. 02

    Planning

Your clinician designs implant positions and the shape, size and colour of your new teeth.

  3. 03

    Surgery

Any remaining teeth that need removal are extracted and implants are placed.

  4. 04

    Temporary teeth

In many cases fixed temporary teeth are fitted soon after surgery while healing occurs.

  5. 05

    Final bridge

After healing, your final full-arch bridge is made and fitted.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • This is major surgery. Risks include infection, swelling, bruising, nerve injury, sinus complications and implant failure.
  • Your bridge will need professional maintenance and may need repairs over time.
  • Excellent daily cleaning and regular reviews are essential.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

FAQs

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

What is the difference between All-on-4 and All-on-6?

Both support a fixed full-arch bridge. All-on-4 uses four implants, often angled to make the most of available bone. All-on-6 uses six implants to spread biting forces further. The right number depends on your bone, jaw size and bite.

Does implant treatment hurt?

Implants are placed under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during the procedure. Some discomfort, swelling and bruising is common for a few days afterwards and can usually be managed with pain relief your clinician recommends. Sedation can be discussed for longer procedures or if you feel anxious.

How long does implant treatment take?

For a single implant, treatment typically takes several months from placement to final crown to allow the implant to integrate with the bone. Bone grafting or full-arch treatment can affect timeframes. Your clinician will give you an estimate for your situation.

How much do dental implants cost?

The cost depends on how many teeth are being replaced, the type of implant restoration, whether extra procedures such as bone grafting are needed, and the materials used. Because every mouth is different, we do not quote a price before a clinician has assessed you.

After your consultation you will receive a written treatment plan with an itemised estimate, so you know the expected cost before anything begins. You can also read about payment options.
