Overview

What are dental veneers?

Veneers are thin coverings bonded to the front surface of teeth. They can change the colour, shape, size or length of teeth, and can be used to close small gaps or improve the appearance of teeth that are chipped, worn or discoloured.

There are two main types. Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory from a thin layer of ceramic. They are highly stain-resistant and can look very natural. Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth using tooth-coloured resin, usually in a single visit, and can often be repaired or adjusted later.

Porcelain veneers usually require a small amount of enamel to be removed so the veneer sits naturally. This is irreversible, so it is important to understand what is involved before you decide.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • Preparing teeth for porcelain veneers is irreversible.
  • Veneers can chip or debond and may need repair or replacement over time. Their lifespan varies with care, bite and habits such as grinding.
  • Teeth may feel sensitive for a short time after preparation.
  • Veneers do not whiten, so any whitening is usually completed beforehand.
  • A night guard may be recommended if you clench or grind your teeth.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

FAQs

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

How long do veneers last?

The lifespan of veneers varies with the material used, your bite, oral hygiene and habits such as grinding. Porcelain veneers can last many years with good care, but all veneers may eventually need repair or replacement. Your clinician will talk through what to expect in your situation.

Should I choose veneers or composite bonding?

Both can improve the shape and colour of teeth. Composite bonding is usually more conservative and lower cost, and can be repaired easily, but it may stain and chip more readily. Porcelain veneers are more stain-resistant and durable, but usually require some enamel to be removed.

The right choice depends on your teeth, goals and budget. Read our guide: Veneers or composite bonding?

How much does a smile makeover cost?

A smile makeover is planned around you, so the cost varies with the treatments involved (for example whitening, bonding, veneers or crowns), how many teeth are treated and the materials chosen.

Your clinician will explain your options at the consultation, and you will receive a written, itemised estimate before treatment starts. Simpler options may be available, and you are never under any obligation to proceed.
