Overview

What is a dental crown?

A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It is used when a tooth has lost a lot of its structure, for example after a large filling, a crack or root canal treatment, and needs protection to keep functioning.

Modern crowns are usually made from high-strength ceramics such as zirconia or lithium disilicate, which can be matched closely to the colour of your natural teeth. Crowns can also form part of a smile makeover, where they are used to improve the shape and appearance of a tooth while restoring its strength.

The process

What to expect

  1. 01

    Assessment

X-rays and an examination to check the tooth, its nerve and surrounding gum.

  2. 02

    Preparation

The tooth is shaped to make room for the crown and a scan or impression is taken.

  3. 03

    Temporary crown

A temporary crown protects the tooth while the final crown is made.

  4. 04

    Fitting

Your crown is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented in place.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • Shaping a tooth for a crown is irreversible.
  • Some teeth may become sensitive, and occasionally a tooth may later need root canal treatment.
  • Crowns can chip, wear or loosen over time and may eventually need replacement.
  • Good brushing, flossing and regular check-ups help protect the tooth underneath.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.

FAQs

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a crown and a veneer?

A veneer covers the front surface of a tooth, mainly to change its appearance. A crown covers the whole tooth and is used when a tooth needs strengthening, for example after a large filling or root canal treatment.
