Overview

What is composite bonding?

Composite bonding uses a tooth-coloured resin that is applied directly to the tooth, shaped by hand and hardened with a curing light. It can repair chips, smooth uneven edges, close small gaps and improve the shape of teeth.

Because little or no natural tooth structure usually needs to be removed, bonding is one of the more conservative cosmetic options. It is often completed in a single appointment, and it can be added to, repaired or polished in future.

Before you decide

Things to consider

  • Composite can stain over time, particularly with coffee, tea, red wine and smoking.
  • It is not as strong as porcelain and may chip; repairs are usually straightforward.
  • Regular polishing and check-ups help it look its best.

FAQs

Common questions

All frequently asked questions

Should I choose veneers or composite bonding?

Both can improve the shape and colour of teeth. Composite bonding is usually more conservative and lower cost, and can be repaired easily, but it may stain and chip more readily. Porcelain veneers are more stain-resistant and durable, but usually require some enamel to be removed.

The right choice depends on your teeth, goals and budget. Read our guide: Veneers or composite bonding?
