Dental implant treatment happens in stages, and understanding them can make the process feel far less daunting. Every case is different, but this is what a typical journey for a single implant looks like.
1. Consultation and 3D scan
Your clinician reviews your medical history, examines your mouth and usually takes a 3D scan (CBCT). This shows the height and width of the bone and the position of nerves and sinuses, which is essential for safe planning.
2. Planning
Using your scans, your clinician plans the size, angle and position of the implant, and the design of the final tooth. You will receive a written plan with a timeframe and an itemised estimate.
3. Preparation, if needed
If a tooth needs removing, or there is not enough bone, extraction or bone grafting may be needed first. This can add time to treatment.
4. Implant placement
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic. Many people are surprised by how manageable the procedure feels. Some swelling and tenderness for a few days is common.
5. Healing and integration
Over the following weeks to months, the bone bonds with the implant surface. A temporary tooth can often be provided so you are not left with a gap.
6. Your final crown
Once the implant is stable, a scan is taken and your custom crown is made and fitted.
7. Long-term care
Implants cannot decay, but the gum and bone around them can become inflamed if not cleaned well. Daily brushing, cleaning between teeth and regular reviews help protect your investment.
Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
